Art in a Time of Covid

Program Description

The Association of Professional Theatre of Newfoundland and Labrador (APTNL) will be partnering with ArtsNL to administer the one-time distribution of 20 $1000 grants as part of the Art in a time of COVID program. Successful applicants will be selected by lottery.

APTNL recognizes and prioritizes a need for increased diversity in the provincial theatre sector. This begins with investment that actively encourages artists who have historically been excluded from our stages to create work, develop their skills, share what they know, and have their voices heard.

APTNL is taking action to bring forward these voices in our sector as we discover what our provincial industry really looks like. We consider this to be the first step in a long-term pursuit of equity for and among theatre artists in this province.

We are committed to distributing the 20 available grants as follows:

20% (4 grants) will go to projects from BIPOC artists;
20% (4 grants) will go to projects from artists who are Deaf or who are living with a disability;
20% (4 grants) will go to projects from artists who identify as trans, non-binary or two-spirit;
40% (8 grants) will go to a general pool of applications.

We encourage ALL individual theatre artists living in Newfoundland and Labrador to apply for a $1000 grant to support a project that will help them to create a work, to develop their skills, to share their knowledge, or anything else that will benefit them as they work toward or within a career in the theatre. Partnerships between artists, or with organizations or community groups are welcome and encouraged.

By ALL theatre artists we mean: anyone working, or who would like to be working in any discipline within theatre, of any background and of any level of experience.
Some examples of projects could be:
  • Developing the next draft of a script in development;
  • Translating or adapting existing narratives into a theatrical format;
  • Undertaking online training, such as PMArts or SMArts workshops;
  • Developing a new skill that will serve your practice - will it help if you can juggle? Spend a week learning how;
  • Working under the mentorship of a more experienced artist or an established arts organization;
  • Sharing skills or knowledge with the theatre community of this province;
  • A live reading/improv show/stand up performance (Please note: any in-person events funded under this program must adhere to public health regulations);
  • Etcetera! Tell us what will benefit you.

All applications will be reviewed for eligibility. To provide as equitable an outcome as possible, successful applications will be selected by lottery.
The deadline for applications is September 30, 2020.
