WHO ARE WE?

The Association of Professional Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador (APTNL) is a member-based service organization for the professional theatre sector in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Our goals are to:
  • develop access to adequate public and private funding;
  • act as a liaison between the sector and the provincial government;
  • cultivate theatre audiences across the province;
  • connect our professional artists and theatre companies, especially across geographical boundaries, to develop a supportive and creative professional community;
  • provide professional development for our membership;
  • develop the sector as it pertains to the inclusion of diverse voices and diverse practices; and
  • connect meaningfully with the BFA Theatre program at Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook, NL.

We also aim to bridge the gap between the provincial sector and the broader market, enabling production and touring opportunities for Newfoundland & Labrador works across the country as well as provincially.

Our membership represents both urban and rural theatre practices and we are committed to developing programming that serves their unique needs.

HISTORY

In November 2015, the Newfoundland members of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres called a meeting of existing theatre companies in the province to gauge interest in forming a provincial sectoral organization for theatre. With funding from the Community Capacity Building program (TCII) and with Eleanor Dawson as facilitator, the interested parties discussed the feasibility of such an organization and determined it was a venture worth exploring.

We have been meeting regularly since then as an ad hoc group and have grown immensely during that time. We have met with funding bodies, the provincial government, and with educational institutions with the shared vision of moving our goals forward and making this organization a reality. We have conducted a study of the professional theatre companies and select community theatre makers of the province to determine how to best serve the needs of the sector. In line with our desire to make this a truly provincial organization, these meetings have taken place all over the island, in Gander, Trinity, St. John’s, Mount Pearl and Corner Brook.

What began as an exploration of the Region 8 Caucus of PACT has grown into a fully realized provincial sectoral theatre organization, the first of its kind in Newfoundland and Labrador.
