Quarterly Report: March 2020
Hello members!
Following is the Quarterly Report from our Executive Committee.
---------
If your math is good, you know that this report is a bit late, for which we apologize! 2020 has already thrown us more than its share of curveballs, including meeting by phone during a history-making snowstorm and, of course, the current crisis relating to COVID-19. However, we want to assure you that the board of APTNL is hard at work to build its resources for the benefit of our members.
Our quarter began with our landmark conference & AGM, held in St. John’s from November 2-4, 2019. Invited guests Alan Dilworth and Maev Beatty enriched us with their understanding of harassment policy, radical listening, and first day practices, and Sean Devine, from the Canada Council for the Arts, was able to present a grant-writing workshop and to meet one-one-one with many participants. Local arts workers Ann Malone, Crystal Laffoley, and Ann Connors gave presentations about accessibility, tech week, and contract writing, respectively, and Jenn Deon presented the first of a series of workshops by the Cultural Human Resources Council in maintaining respectful workplaces. Ann C also facilitated a provocation, led by questions from Prajwala Dixit and Santiago Guzmán, to encourage thoughtful discussion about who holds the power in our community and how we can all engage in making the industry more welcoming and inclusive.
At our AGM we elected a board of 12 members, and officially adopted the organisation’s by-laws and fiscal year end. If you would like a copy of the minutes, please be in touch and we’ll be happy to provide you with one.
In February, we were very pleased to be able to offer, in partnership with Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland, a seminar in managing the theatre industry’s carbon footprint, led by the National Arts Centre’s Sarah Stanley.
Coming up, we will be hosting a workshop for playwrights of all levels in association with the Playwrights’ Atlantic Resource Centre, St. John’s Shorts and the Women’s Work Festival. You Need A Dramaturge! will take place April 4 & 5 and is now accepting registration. Since we cannot safely get our workshop facilitator to Newfoundland right now, we are moving this workshop online. Please see: http://www.playwrightsatlantic.ca/news-events/events/playwriting-workshop-you-need-a-dramaturge for more information.
APTNL was successful in its first application to the City of St. John’s Grants to Arts Organizations program. While our $3000 grant is small, we aim to continue to partner with like-minded organizations to bring forward services that can benefit our membership. Because of the source of this funding, activities that take place under it must be centred in St. John’s. However, we are investigating ways to direct our resources online in order to make them available to our members who are not able to participate in person. Stay tuned for details.
We know how weird it is to be sending out a report about the last quarter in the midst of a global crisis – especially one that has made it impossible for people to gather in large groups, like, for instance, the audiences of live theatre. We know that everything is not OK. We are too small and too new to offer direct crisis-relief resources, but we want to do our best to support our members by being the point of contact for advocacy to all levels of government and to the public to support our members who suddenly find themselves out of work. To that end, below, you’ll find a list of resources that we’ve been compiling from government and NGO sources which may help you out during this difficult time. We’ve also attached the slides and transcript from PACT’s recent Town Hall which can help to address some of your questions, especially if you are a producer with something coming up.
We are going to do our best to keep a bit of momentum going from our respective homes, and welcome
any suggestions you may have about the best way to support you right now.
All our best,
Pat, Courtney, Gaylene & Sharon
Executive of the Board, APTNL
